Are There Any Special Risks with Zygomatic Implants?

Like any surgical procedure, zygomatic implants have specific risks. Here is an honest overview.

Zygomatic implants are very safe when placed by an experienced surgeon, but they involve risks that are different from regular implants due to their location near the sinus and eye socket.

  • Common side effects (temporary):
  • Cheek swelling and bruising β€” normal and expected, resolves in 1–2 weeks
  • Sinus congestion β€” the sinus is involved in the surgery; temporary stuffiness is normal
  • Nosebleed β€” minor bleeding from the sinus area is possible for a few days
  • Black eye β€” bruising can extend to the lower eyelid area
  • Less common but more significant:
  • Sinusitis β€” the implant passes through the sinus, and sinus infection is possible. Preventable with proper planning and post-op care
  • Oro-antral fistula β€” an abnormal opening between the mouth and sinus. Rare with proper technique
  • Implant exposure in the sinus β€” the tip of the implant may protrude slightly into the sinus; usually harmless but monitored
  • Nerve injury β€” the infraorbital nerve (below the eye) can be affected, causing temporary cheek numbness
  • Damage to nearby structures β€” very rare, but the eye socket or other structures could be affected

How Risks Are Minimized

  • 3D CT scanning β€” precise planning before surgery
  • Computer-guided surgery β€” guides the implant placement with millimeter accuracy
  • Experienced surgeon β€” the most important factor in reducing risk
  • Proper post-operative care β€” avoiding nose blowing, taking prescribed medications
