How Long Is Recovery After Zygomatic Implant Surgery?

Recovery from zygomatic implant surgery is manageable. Here is what to expect.

Recovery from zygomatic implant surgery is similar to recovery from full arch regular implants, with a few differences due to the involvement of the sinus and cheekbone area.

  • Week 1 (acute recovery):
  • Moderate swelling of the cheek and around the eye area β€” peaks at 2–3 days
  • Some bruising on the cheek may extend toward the eye
  • Pain managed with prescribed or over-the-counter medication
  • Cold compresses applied to the face for the first 48 hours
  • Soft or liquid diet
  • No strenuous activity
  • Keep your head elevated while sleeping
  • Weeks 2–4:
  • Swelling and bruising largely resolve
  • Pain is minimal or gone
  • You can resume most daily activities
  • Gradual transition to soft solid foods
  • Avoid blowing your nose vigorously (the sinus is involved in the surgery)
  • Months 2–4 (osseointegration):
  • The cheekbone grows and bonds with the implant
  • You wear temporary teeth
  • You feel normal in daily life
  • Eat a soft-to-normal diet

Important Precautions

  • No nose blowing for 2–3 weeks β€” the sinus was involved in surgery, and blowing your nose can disrupt healing
  • No sneezing with your mouth closed β€” sneeze with your mouth open to reduce pressure in the sinus
  • Avoid straws for 1–2 weeks (suction can affect the surgical site)
  • Sleep with your head elevated for the first week
