What Is a Neck Lift?
A neck lift specifically targets the aging neck. Here is what it involves and who it is for.
A neck lift (platysmaplasty) is a surgical procedure that tightens the muscles and removes excess skin and fat from the neck to create a more defined, youthful neck contour.
- What a neck lift addresses:
- "Turkey neck" or loose hanging skin under the chin
- Vertical neck bands (platysmal bands)
- Excess fat under the chin (double chin)
- Poor definition between the jawline and neck
- Sagging that does not respond to diet or exercise
- How it is performed:
- Incisions are placed under the chin and/or behind the ears
- The platysma muscle is tightened in the midline
- Excess fat is removed (liposuction may be included)
- Excess skin is trimmed
- The skin is redraped
- Neck lift vs. facelift:
- A neck lift focuses only on the neck (below the jawline)
- A facelift includes the cheeks, jawline, and often the neck
- Many patients benefit from both performed together
Who Is a Good Candidate
- Patients with significant neck aging
- Those with good skin elasticity
- People with prominent neck bands
- Non-smokers
- Patients in good health
Recovery
- Recovery is similar to facelift recovery:
- 1β2 weeks before returning to work
- A chin/neck garment is worn for 1β2 weeks
- Swelling and bruising under the chin
- Scars are hidden under the chin and behind the ears
Clinical Guidance
A neck lift targets sagging skin, excess fat, and muscle bands in the neck that create an aged appearance. It is often performed alongside a facelift for comprehensive rejuvenation but can be done alone for patients whose primary concern is the neck.
