What Is a Dental Implant and How Does It Work?

A dental implant is a small, screw-like post made of titanium (or sometimes zirconia) that is placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. It serves as an anchor for a replacement tooth (crown), bridge, or denture.
How it works in three steps:
- The implant post β a titanium screw is surgically placed into the jawbone where the tooth root used to be. Titanium is used because the bone naturally grows around it and bonds with it β a process called osseointegration
- Healing and bonding β over 2β6 months, the bone grows into the microscopic surface of the implant, locking it firmly in place. This creates a strong foundation that can support chewing forces
- The restoration β once the implant is secure, a connector piece (abutment) is attached, and a custom-made crown (artificial tooth) is placed on top. The result looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth
- The implant itself is not visible once placed β it is under the gum line
- The visible part (crown) is made to match your natural teeth in color and shape
