What Is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)?
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your eyelids, blepharoplasty may be the solution. Here is what it involves.
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, muscle, and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids to create a more rested, youthful appearance. It can also improve vision in some cases.
- What it addresses:
- Upper eyelids: Droopy, heavy skin that covers the eyelid crease; puffiness from excess fat
- Lower eyelids: Under-eye bags, puffy fat pockets, excess skin, and fine wrinkles
- How it is done:
- Upper blepharoplasty: An incision is made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Excess skin and fat are removed, and the incision is closed with fine sutures
- Lower blepharoplasty: Incisions are made either just below the lash line (external) or inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival β no visible scar). Excess fat is removed or repositioned, and skin is tightened
Types of Blepharoplasty
- Upper blepharoplasty β addresses the upper eyelids only
- Lower blepharoplasty β addresses under-eye bags and puffiness
- Double blepharoplasty β both upper and lower in one surgery
- Asian blepharoplasty β creates a supratarsal crease (double eyelid)
When to See a Surgeon
- Consider blepharoplasty if:
- Your upper eyelids feel heavy or tired
- The skin of your upper eyelids hangs over your lashes
- You have persistent under-eye bags that make you look tired
- Your vision is affected by drooping upper eyelid skin
Clinical Guidance
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) removes excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids to create a more youthful, rested appearance. It can also improve vision when heavy upper lids obstruct the visual field.
