Healing after a single implant happens in stages. The full process typically takes 3β6 months from implant placement to having the final crown.
Healing timeline:
- First few days (acute healing):
- Swelling peaks at 2β3 days, then subsides
- Mild discomfort managed with pain relievers
- Soft food diet recommended
- Most patients return to work within 1β3 days
- First 2 weeks (soft tissue healing):
- The gum around the implant heals
- Stitches may be removed at 7β14 days
- You can gradually return to a normal diet (avoid chewing on the implant site)
- 2β6 months (osseointegration β bone healing):
- This is the critical phase where the bone grows around and bonds with the titanium implant
- The lower jaw typically heals faster (3β4 months) than the upper jaw (4β6 months) because lower jawbone is denser
- You can wear a temporary tooth during this time
- After abutment placement (2β4 weeks):
- Once the abutment is placed, the gum takes 2β4 weeks to heal around it
- Then the final crown can be attached
