How Long Is Recovery After Otoplasty?

Otoplasty has a straightforward recovery. Here is what to expect.

Recovery from otoplasty is generally quick and comfortable compared to many facial surgeries.

Recovery timeline:

  • First 24–48 hours:
  • A bandage or headband is worn over the ears
  • Mild discomfort managed with pain medication
  • Children usually need pain medication for 1–2 days
  • Adults often need only over-the-counter medication
  • Week 1:
  • The headband is worn at all times (except for hygiene)
  • Stitches are removed at 7–10 days (if not dissolvable)
  • Swelling and bruising are minimal
  • Most children return to school at day 7
  • Weeks 2–4:
  • The headband is worn at night only
  • You can gradually resume normal activities
  • Ears may feel numb or sensitive (temporary)
  • Months 1–3:
  • The headband is no longer needed
  • The ears look natural
  • Scars behind the ears continue to fade

Activity Restrictions

  • No contact sports for 6 weeks
  • No sleeping on the side for 2 weeks
  • Avoid glasses or headphones resting on the ears for 2 weeks
  • Gentle hair washing after 1 week (avoid getting incisions wet)

Clinical Guidance

Otoplasty recovery is relatively quick. A headband is worn for 2–4 weeks (full-time for the first week, then at night). Most children return to school at 1 week, and adults return to work at 1 week. The ears look natural within weeks.
