How Long Is Recovery After a Facelift?

Facelift recovery is a gradual process. Here is what to expect week by week.

Recovery from a facelift requires patience but is manageable with proper preparation.

  • Week 1 (most intense):
  • Bandages and drains may be in place for 1–2 days
  • Swelling and bruising are significant (peaks at day 2–3)
  • Pain is mild to moderate, managed with medication
  • Head elevated at all times
  • Ice packs reduce swelling
  • Stitches removed at 7–10 days
  • Week 2 (returning to normal):
  • Bruising fades significantly
  • Swelling continues to decrease
  • Most patients return to work
  • You can resume light activity
  • Makeup can conceal residual bruising
  • Weeks 3–4:
  • Most bruising is gone
  • Residual swelling persists (more noticeable to you than others)
  • Normal daily activities are comfortable
  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Months 1–3:
  • Swelling continues to settle
  • The result becomes more visible
  • Scars around the ears begin to fade
  • You can resume all activities
  • Months 3–12:
  • Scars mature and become less visible
  • The final result is clearly visible
  • Subtle changes continue

Recovery Tips

  • Sleep with your head elevated for 2 weeks
  • Do not bend over or lift heavy objects for 2 weeks
  • Avoid sun exposure on scars for 6 months
  • Use scar cream as directed

Clinical Guidance

The first week is the most intense, with swelling and bruising. Most patients return to work at 2 weeks and look socially presentable at 3–4 weeks. Scars continue to fade for up to a year. Final results are visible at 3–6 months.
