What Is a Crown on an Implant Made Of?

Implant crowns are made from two common materials, each with its own benefits.
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM):
- A metal inner core covered with porcelain
- Very strong and durable
- Good for molars where chewing forces are highest
- May show a thin dark line at the gum line over time as gums recede
- More affordable option
- Zirconia (all-ceramic):
- Made from a single block of zirconium oxide β a very strong, tooth-colored material
- Most natural-looking option β no metal dark line
- Highly biocompatible (gums respond well to it)
- Very strong, though not quite as strong as PFM for extreme chewing forces
- More expensive than PFM
- The most popular choice for visible front teeth
- Other options:
- E-max (lithium disilicate) β a glass-ceramic material, very natural-looking, good for front teeth
- Gold alloy β rarely used today but very durable

- Front teeth: Zirconia or e-max for the most natural appearance
- Back teeth (molars): Zirconia or PFM for strength
