How Long Is Recovery After Cleft Palate Repair?
Palate surgery has a specific recovery process. Here is what parents can expect.
Recovery from cleft palate repair (palatoplasty) takes about 2β4 weeks before the baby feels back to normal.
- Week 1 (immediate recovery):
- Hospital stay: 2β4 days
- Swelling in the mouth (may make the baby uncomfortable)
- Pain medication via IV or liquid
- Liquid diet only (by bottle, syringe, or cup)
- Arm restraints prevent the baby from putting fingers or objects in the mouth
- No straws, spoons, or hard objects near the palate
- Weeks 2β4:
- Pain decreases significantly
- Diet advances to soft pureed foods
- Arm restraints continue for 2β3 weeks
- The surgical site is healing (may look white or yellow β this is normal tissue)
- Months 1β3:
- The palate is healed
- Diet returns to normal
- Arm restraints are no longer needed
- Speech may begin to improve (if the baby was already babbling)
Important Restrictions
- No hard foods for 4β6 weeks
- No straws for 4 weeks (suction can affect the repair)
- No objects in the mouth (spoons are OK for soft foods)
- Avoid blowing into bottles or sippy cups
Warning Signs
- Contact the surgeon if:
- The baby has fever or signs of infection
- You see bleeding from the palate
- The baby will not take any fluids
- You see a new opening in the palate (possible fistula)
Clinical Guidance
Recovery from cleft palate repair takes about 2β4 weeks. The soft food diet and arm restraints are the biggest adjustments for parents. By 1 month, the palate is healed, and the baby can eat and drink normally.
