How Long Does Eyelid Surgery Recovery Take?

Eyelid surgery has one of the fastest recovery times in facial plastic surgery. Here is what to expect.

Recovery from blepharoplasty is relatively quick, with most patients returning to normal activities within 7–14 days.

Recovery timeline:

  • Days 1–3:
  • Swelling and bruising around the eyes
  • Stitches are in place (removed at 5–7 days)
  • Ice packs reduce swelling
  • Head elevated
  • No reading or screen time for the first 24–48 hours
  • Days 4–7:
  • Stitches removed at day 5–7
  • Swelling decreases significantly
  • You can use makeup to conceal bruising
  • Most patients feel ready to go out
  • Weeks 2–4:
  • Bruising fades substantially
  • Residual swelling (usually unnoticeable to others)
  • Normal daily activities
  • Light exercise allowed
  • Months 1–3:
  • Scars mature and become less visible
  • The final result becomes clear
  • All activities are normal

Recovery Tips

  • Use cold compresses continuously for the first 48 hours
  • Sleep with your head elevated on 2 pillows for 1 week
  • No contact lenses for 2 weeks (wear glasses instead)
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 2–3 weeks
  • Avoid sun exposure on scars
  • Use artificial tears if your eyes feel dry

Clinical Guidance

Blepharoplasty recovery is relatively quick. Stitches are removed at 1 week, bruising is presentable by 2 weeks, and you look very good by 3–4 weeks. Most patients say the recovery is easier than they expected.
