I Have a Bleeding Sore in My Mouth That Won't Stop
A sore in your mouth that bleeds easily or does not stop bleeding can be alarming. Here is what to do.
Mouth sores that bleed are common, but the context matters. A bleeding sore that does not heal or bleeds easily every time you touch it needs evaluation.
- Common causes include:
- Traumatic ulcer β a sore from biting your cheek or a sharp tooth edge; can bleed when disturbed
- Canker sore β can sometimes bleed, especially if large
- Gum disease (gingivitis) β swollen, inflamed gums that bleed easily with brushing
- Blood clotting disorder β if you are on blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder
- Pyogenic granuloma β a benign, red, rapidly growing bump that bleeds very easily
- Oral cancer β a cancerous sore may bleed easily because the tissue is fragile
What to Look For
- Usually not serious:
- Bleeding that stops with gentle pressure
- Sore that appeared after an injury
- Gums that bleed only when you brush or floss
- Heals within 1β2 weeks
- Worth having checked:
- A sore that bleeds easily every time you touch it β without a clear injury
- Bleeding that is hard to stop
- Sore that has not healed after 2 weeks
- Dark, clotted blood coming from the area
- You are on blood thinners and have unusual bleeding
When to See a Doctor
- See a dentist or doctor if:
- The sore bleeds easily and does not heal within 2 weeks
- You have a spot that bleeds every time you touch it
- The bleeding is difficult to stop
- You have a lump or growth that bleeds when touched
- You are on blood thinners and notice new oral bleeding
- You have other symptoms like numbness, pain, or a neck lump
